James A. Dumas, Jr. received mediation training at Pepperdine University and has served as a member of the mediation panel for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California since the panel's creation. He has served as mediator in approximately seventy matters.

Preparation is central to Mr. Dumas's approach. In addition to reviewing the parties' mediation briefs, he frequently reviews relevant pleadings, documents, and other materials in advance to develop a meaningful understanding of the dispute before the mediation begins.

 

During mediation, Mr. Dumas takes an active and engaged approach, working to understand the perspectives and objectives of the participants while identifying the legal, factual, practical, and interpersonal considerations that may present obstacles or opportunities for settlement. Drawing on decades of experience in litigation and insolvency matters, he helps parties evaluate their positions and explore practical paths toward resolution.
